We started growing sunflowers at school in March, and I planted three sunflowers and they all germinated but one sunflower (Raindrop) died :'( One, Rainbow, is at school and the one that has the seeds ready to count, Sunny, is at home standing very very very tall and is even bigger than me!!!!!!!!!!
We were asked to create a sunflower video to introduce our sunflowers. this is mine...:) 192 people have watched my video last time i checked!!
I learnt to count the seeds when i visited here and met Erinma ,who showed me how the Fibonacci sequence works. She showed us all the things we need to measure on our sunflower-
The height from the top of the roots to the centre of the disc (the middle bit of the sunflower head)
Sunny is 152 cm
The number of petals
Sunny had 23 petals but we had to count them from a photograph because the wind blew all Sunny's petals away ages ago!
The length of the biggest leaf
Sunny's biggest leaf is 15cm long
The width of the biggest leaf
Sunny's biggest leaf is 9cm wide
The number of bracts (they are the green leaves around the disc)
Sunny has 39 bracts
The width of the disc
Sunny is 11cm across
Then we learnt how to count the spirals! Erinma said it was easy if you took out one row of seeds to start you off like this:
and then took out one seed every ten rows. It was much easier than I thought it was going to be to count the spirals and guess what? On Erinma's sunflower we counted 55 rows of seeds which is a Fibonacci number!
You can learn about Fibonacci numbers here.
We have not counted the spirals yet because we want to save the seeds and Sunny needs to dry out and be all brown first
It was so great to meet Erinma because we have been emailing back and forth and talking on Twitter and stuff so it was nice to meet her at last!
After we met Erinma we went and had a look at the rest of Dig the City, and then we went to MOSI to the Maker Faire, but that is for the next blog post!
Tomorrow I am going on holiday to Aunty Becky's!
